It is places like Pinwheel that truly make me miss living in Ferndale. Good coffee (they sell Stumptown Coffee), good baked goods (love their macarons) and great ambiance. This place was my Sunday morning treat when I was a Ferndalian and try to go back as often as I can . The hours are a bit short, but that is also part of what makes at trip special. Also, the baked good can be hit-or-miss at time, especially the savory stuff, but I have yet to find a small time place like this that can deliver 100% of the time. This might not be a place that all will find worth travelling for, but I personally love this joint.

Pinwheel has some really tasty stuff-- say, for instance, Magic Bars (which have held a special place in my heart ever since 4th grade summer camp). They also have some tasty cookies, and they sell gluten-free stuff and maybe even some vegan stuff, which is good for you fringe-market dessert eaters. Pinwheel is also the only place in the area that I've found that sells French macaroons. The ones here are good, though if you have done any significant macaroon eating in your life, you'll immediately recognize that they aren't great. Oh, and they make really cute iced sugar cookies in charming shapes. Perfect for little kids who don't mind their teeth falling out, and parents who don't mind their kids flying off into an unbelievable sugar high.

Pies! Pies! Pies! (That should have been sung along to Motley Crue's "Girls Girls Girls" obvi) These pies are goooooooood. We ordered the standard pumpkin and the fancy apple for Thanksgiving and both were fabulous! The pumpkin was smooth and not too sweet. A nice blend of spices and decorated with these adorable little leaf sugar ginger cookies. Yum! The apple was not what I was expecting but in the best way. It's almost like a layered pie. There's this yummy, buttery crust topped with spiced apples and then a thicker topping that's almost like a double crust. But it's not a standard top crust. It's a crumble but not like any crumble I'd had before. It was so thick and dense that it was basically a cookie. YUM. Then it's drizzled with plenty of caramel goodness to make it all pretty and even more delicious. Big fan of this one! Although it IS very untraditional so if you're jonesing for an apple pie just get the regular. Super duper quick service when we picked them up the day before Thanksgiving. Called the order in the week before and all we had to do was grab them and pay. Once again the staff was v. nice and the price was reasonable for pies of this quality. Would definitely order from them again for upcoming holidays!

My prayers have been answered! A good bakery that is close to home! This place has a large selection of tasty treats. I personally LOVE their shortbread cookies and Mexican Tea Cookies...and I sampled some fruit tart they had on the counter- Apricot I believe? - I it was equally as tasty! These little cookies are just enough sweet treat to accompany your morning dose of caffeine. Just delightful! As for their sandwich offerings...I had their Turkey Havarti Panini yesterday...and I was really pleasantly surprised. The ingredients were all really fresh- thinly sliced smoked Turkey, delicious fluffy Havarti, fresh greens and the best part- onion Chutney- it was a bit sweet and a great pairing with the smoked taste of the turkey and the slight sharpness of the Havarti. I'll admit, I am biased, put anything on that panini bread and you really can't go wrong with me. They also have a variety of sodas, my personal favorite since Clearly Canadian fell off the map: Izze soft drinks. Yum! The atmosphere is cozy and unique with giant paper pinwheels hanging from the ceiling, kids drawings on the walls. It's really a great little quiet spot for some tasty treats!

Attention yelpers...I have a job for you!!!! It involves eating yummy things so listen up!! You see, I love french macarons. If you have never had one before you seriously do not know what you are missing. Sadly, Michigan does not have many bakery's that carry this tasty treat. I heard a rumor that Pinwheel carried these delectable treats so I headed over to stock up!!! The bakery is very cute with a retro type feel to the design. I stepped up to thier display case of yumminess and searched for my macarons. Sadly there were none there. Here is where you come in yelpers. They advised me that they were not stocked today because the macarons were poor sellers?!?!?! I feel it is my job....nay, my duty to let Michigan know how delicous these cookies are. So...back to your job. Go to Pinwheel and ask for a macaron!!! Hopefully if enough people DO THEIR JOB then they will start stocking them again. You may think this is the end of my review...but its not. I mean...I was in a bakery..OF COURSE I am going to order up some goods! It was very hard to decide. Everything looked amazing. We decided to stack our bakery box full. We ordered up a peanut butter cookies stuffed with brownie bites, a key lime pie bar, a lemon tart, a bumpie cake and a lavender shortbread cookie. The husband and I scarfed down our cookies right then and there and saved the other treats for later. My shortbread cookie was amazing. I love things that include lavender so it already had me there. Even though it was small it packed a delicous butter punch. The husbands cookie was just so/so...I think the description sounded much better on paper then it tasted. oh well...not everything can be perfect. Our three other treats are currently chillin' in our fridge just calling our name. I will admit...I have tasted all three and they are all fabulous. I can't wait until my late night snack...I am counting down the minutes!

Funky. Fresh. Cute. I decided to do things a little different today. Pastries @ the Pinwheel bakery and then lunch. My sweet tooth needed some attention, so to appease it, I ordered a raspberry macaroon, 3 chai almond tea cakes, a ginger molasses cookie and a sparkling clementine drink. The macaroon was so buttery delicious, and the chai almond tea cakes were equally delish. They had bumpy cake in the fridge, but it wasn't one of those chocolate cravings. I could see myself perched on one of their chairs, sipping and snacking away while the whole world was passing me by. I'd go in there everyday if I lived close by. The environment is so uplifting with the bright lime green painted walls and teal accents and multi-colored origami hanging from the lights and ceiling. Low-ledges and chairs and stools for the kids to sit and color while enjoying a cupcake or cookie. They even showcase the children's artwork in their windows and on their walls. They have some kid's books too. They have cute vintage aprons on display that are for sale and the cutest knick-knacky looking shelf for the sugar/creams for coffee with homemade honey and the like. They also packaged the macaroon and chai tea cakes in their own cellophane mini baggy with the pinwheel bakery logo sticker. Very cute.
